Let's talk about stress, baby.
2020 is proving to be the year that pushes us to our limits.
We are all adapting to and accepting the new challenges that face us in this changing world, be it a career change, a new direction for your business or changing family circumstances. According to the experts, our stress levels, anxiety and need for mental health care is greatly increased as we navigate through it.
So what effect is this having on our wellbeing? Stress wreaks havoc on the body causing high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, low sex drive and risk of heart attack to name just a few. We see many patients with a common condition called BRUXISM. This is the term used for teeth grinding and jaw clenching.
Bruxism happens when we are either asleep or concentrating.
So what are the signs?
- Facial pain or discomfort
- Stiffness of the jaw
- Disturbed sleep
- Broken or worn teeth
There are many options available, such as treatment for stress and anxiety, muscle relaxation techniques, botox and reshaping abnormal biting surfaces on the teeth, however a popular and easy solution is a mouth guard or splints. These may be worn at night, for those who grind while sleeping, or during the day and although they can be bought over the counter, we highly recommend having one custom made. Mouth guards and splints are meant to fit and protect your individual set of teeth. Shop bought versions are a 'one size fits all' type of product which can feel uncomfortable and ill-fitting. If it doesn't fit properly it won't do the job you bought it to do. Your dentist can asses your teeth and bite, to figure out specific problem areas and develop a healthcare plan specifically for you. He/she will take moulds of your mouth, creating a tailor made and comfortable fitting mouthguard.
If you would like to chat about Bruxism or any other dental issues that may be troubling you, please do not hesitate to let us know at your next appointment or schedule a consultation with Dr Mark or Dr Betty. A problem shared is a problem halved... or in this case, a possible fix :-)
