Why it's important to 'LOVE THY DENTIST'.

As far back as I remember, a trip to the dentist was accompanied by quips from mum and a wink from dad. Everyone seemed to dislike attending appointments. Times have changed dramatically in the last decade but our mindset regarding the dentist, has not. As I crossed the carpark today I heard two old friends discussing their mornings. Now, I’m not usually one to listen in on other peoples conversations, but they caught my attention as one of whom said he had just visited the dentist. His friends reply? “Oh well, your day can only get better mate”.

It became apparent to me that we, as a society, have created a caricature of this profession, just like boring accountants and angry lawyers. It has become ingrained in us to ‘hate thy dentist’!

But the hard truth is that dentists are human, they are professionals who have trained for many years to help you, and most of them are surprisingly lovely!

That’s all well and good I hear you say but why should you “love thy dentist”? What’s in it for you?

200 years ago tooth decay was a leading cause of death. Yes that’s right tooth decay can be deadly (now the dentist doesn’t look so bad!). Modern dentistry and improvement of personal hygiene has mostly alleviated the fatal side of decay, but it should still be taken very seriously. When tooth decay is present, the colonies of bacteria which attack teeth and gums are released into the body when the gums bleed. This may happen when brushing or eating and it can lead to wider health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

This why it is so important to visit the dentist regularly so we can keep on top of any escalating problems. Visiting the dentist should be viewed as essential to your overall health and shouldn’t be somewhere to go just when you’re in pain. I’m not gonna lie, it may come with some discomfort at times. But if you keep up to date with your appointments the most uncomfortable part will be saying goodbye!

We recommend you visit the dentist every 6 months to keep on top of any existing or upcoming issues. Remember, the longer you leave it the worse it will get (and the more expensive)!

So, lets start a new chapter and change the way we look at dentistry and the amazing doctors looking after you. After all #lovethydentist actually means you will be loving thy self!
